Sooo I’ve been really into Boardwalk Empire lately, the new HBO period piece series, produced by Martin Scorsese, focusing on corruption, gangsters, love, and life in 1920s Prohibition era Atlantic City. The cast is star studded with Steve Buschemi, Michael Pitt, and the ever alluring Paz de La Huerta. While the story line is pretty captivating, the music and style, and overall authenticity of the scenes, really seal the deal for me. I’ve needed a new show to obsess over during this between season Mad Men vacuum and this Boardwalk Empire definitely looks to be it.
My friends and are planning to throw a Boardwalk Empire themed party once Spring Semester starts. I LOVE throwing themed party and definitely plan on going all out on this one. We’ve already started throwing around ideas. Costumes are a must obviously, and we’re thinking about setting our apartment up as a upscale speakeasy/smoking lounge type of place. Perhaps even having someone at the door behind a little latch, as a doorman, asking, "What’s the word" like they did in real speakeasies.
The atmosphere: smoky, hazy, decadent, and languorous. A setting Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan would definitely be seen in! Lots of ragtime playing: Djante Reinhardt, Scott Joplin, Early Jazz.
long cigarette holders, feathers, furs, garters, flapper gowns for the ladies.
dapper suits, smoking jacket, pomade/palmade? for the gents.
Whiskey and gin flowin’ like a fountain!
